El m rtirio de San Laurencio has occupied an important place in literature since the late fourth century. Many versions exist as a dozen poems on St. Lawrence in Romance languages from the late twelfth century and early fourteenth have appeared, but the Berceo version is considered one of the best in its simplicity and straightforwardness.
