Suicide is perhaps the most personal action of an individual, though many social factors play a significant role in the onset of suicidal behaviour, The present book on suicide is based on original research conducted on suicides in the Indian context, It has covered suicides committed and attempted 25 years before and 25 years after Independence in the Union Terri-torv of Delhi, The book presents a comparison of suicides and committed suicides in terms of socio demographic factors, causes that led to the act, the time, methods used, degree of isolation, the seasons and climatic factors influencing suicidal behaviour and so on. The book has also analysed the suicidal pact cases in terms of the above factors, An indepth analysis of 62 attempted suicide cases based on personal inter-view and psychological tests are presented in vivid detail. The book has also discussed the suicide rates in Delhi over the years and forecasts the possible trends in both attempted and committed suicides. The findings are discussed in the light of earlier studies and preventive measures to be taken by various agencies.
