Beskrivelse
Lupus is an inflammatory disease that affects the joints and causes symptoms such as joint pain, skin rash and fatigue. It is not possible to provide a cure for lupus, however, it is possible to improve symptoms if treatment is initiated early. As an autoimmune disease, lupus is difficult to diagnose due to its similarities to other conditions. Symptoms of lupus include inflammation of various parts of the body, such as the lungs, heart and liver, as well as joints and kidneys.
To manage lupus, it is recommended to have regular tests and examinations, such as blood tests to monitor for anaemia and urinary tests to assess for kidney problems. Lupus is a condition in which the immune system starts attacking healthy parts of the body. It's not contagious, and we don't know exactly what causes it.
Potential causes of lupus include viral infection, certain medications, exposure to sunlight, puberty, childbirth, and menopause. It is more common in women than men, and is more prevalent in African and Asian females. Treatment of lupus is typically based on anti-inflammatory medications, such as Ibuprofen and hydroxychloroquine, to address fatigue, skin and joint issues, as well as steroid tablets, injections, creams, and other treatments for inflammation of the kidneys and rashes. In severe cases, the use of two medicines (ratuximab or belimumab) is sometimes used.
