The primary aim of this introduction to the scholarly engagement with the linguistic meaning of units of Italian vocabulary is both to convey insight into the most important issues and research approaches and to provide a guide to the basic terminology. Students are acquainted with the practical applications of the subject via reference to as many examples as possible and indication of the immediate relevance of the topics dealt with for the compilation of Italian dictionaries.
