This first-hand account of a 19th century sealing expedition is based on the diary of Lewis Coolidge (1783-1871), who set out on a five-year voyage to catch seals and to sell their skins in China for tea, porcelain, silk and other prized commodities. The book also contains a brief history of 'The Old China Trade' and a biography of Coolidge.
