Letters to Our Mothers

Our mothers are the first people we communicate with, trusting her without question. It is she who takes our first breath. It is through her that life is exacted. She determines our emotional well-being and the level of well-being that we will emanate from. If she is not well, we are not well. From the womb, we learn to communicate through our mothers and so we begin to form our habits of communication there. Our mothers are the leaders of our communities whether they possess the label or not and when that connection is strained or cut off we find ourselves stagnant and yearning. It is through my own struggles to communicate with my mother that I realized the importance of open, honest and loving communication. Through this type of communication we are able to see our mothers as human beings instead of robots. We realize that it is imperative for our youth to finally be heard. We learn that it is ok to be vulnerable and so we exhale and let go. We let go of holding on to secrets and pain, some not our own, and we heal; we rebuild. We free ourselves and we become closer and our communities benefit.
