This work presents the materialism of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as the opposite of a metaphysics of vital forces imagined later. Both materialism and vitalism seek to capture the scientific shifts that followed the scientific revolution, culminating in "biology" at the end of the eighteenth century.
