This book tells about young student 'I' got to know a man who wants to commit suicide accidentally. We became very good friend with each other. Before committing suicide, Mr. unknown wrote a letter to 'me', explaining the reason for his suicide: when he was young, he used an obscure means to win the friend and rival in love-K, which led to K's suicide. From then on, Mr. unknown started to doubt the goodness of human beings and can't get out from the guilt. It depicts an image of an intellectual struggling with ethics.
