Knuckles, Grandma Bea: A Story of Love, Loss & Connection is an endearing and memorable story about a family's connection to their babysitter and the bonds that remain even after they must say goodbye. It is narrated from the perspective of the oldest daughter.
Julie's family has a custom. Whenever it is time to say goodbye, they do "knuckles." Grandma Bea is their favorite babysitter. She does crafts with them, teaches them games, reads with them, and more. She gives lots of good advice and is always encouraging with her "Oh.....My.....Goodness."
When Grandma Bea becomes ill and doesn't survive, Julie's family experiences sadness and grief. Each of the four siblings offer us insight into different reactions to death. What they all find comfort in are memories, community and Grandma Bea's many everlasting "gifts." They show us how it is possible to remain connected to our loved ones.
Julie's bond with Grandma Bea is especially strong and beautiful. Ultimately, Julie says a private goodbye to Grandma Bea by way of their "knuckles" custom. The final message is that love continues to live within each of us.
Knuckles, Grandma Bea: A Story of Love, Loss & Connection is a great resource for parents, teachers, counselors and therapists as it encourages conversations about death, grieving and the bonds shared with caretakers. There are many talking points throughout and the pace is intentionally slow to allow time for questions and comments. The beautiful illustrations make the story accessible to younger children.
