The third novel in the series, Soldier of the Queen, continuing the career of James Sangster. Having destroyed his promising career as an officer in the Royal Artillery he is forced to enlist under the name of Seamus Quinn in the 66th Regiment of Foot. After the debacle of the battle of Maiwand, the remnant of the regiment becomes the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Following the attempt to rescue Gordon of Khartoum, the Battalion is sent to Ireland to deal with the Fenian volunteers intent on creating an independent Ireland.
Quinn becomes part of the mounted infantry who are detached under the command of the civil authorities based in Dublin Castle. Inspector Robinson of the Royal Irish Constabulary has control of the detachment and his idea of justice is to support the ruling class of landowners against tenants and working people.
