Not just the heritage of the Nazi, says Gaab (history, State U. of New York-Farmingdale) but nearly a century of political tradition had to be dismantled and replaced by the US occupation forces after World War II. He details how the US military reorganized the legal system in accordance with the principles of democracy, and how the Germans, though aware that radical changes were necessary, were conscious of the part the judiciary played in sabotaging the previous experiment with democratic government, the Weimar Republic.
