Potter-turned-novelist William de Morgan began writing Joseph Vance; An Ill Written Autobiography while he was living in Florence. He was despondent over the bankruptcy of his pottery business and in ill-health when he undertook this wildly romantic story. Enormously popular when first published, its a classic of American literature.
