During his testimony Valachi revealed the existence of five crime families in New York and one in New Jersey and named families in Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Tampa, Boston and Providence. He named bosses and underbosses, declared (Correctly) that there were about 2000 made men in New York, and identified 289 of them.
