Beskrivelse

This is a memoir of Zalman Shoval's long journey, from the ghettos of Danzig to Israel in its earliest year, his rise as a political leader and successful businessman, and the culmination of his diplomatic career as Israel's ambassador to the United States, first in during the presidency of George H. W. Bush and, again, during the Clinton years. Shoval's story mirrors the story of the State of Israel and the years leading up to it. He gives the reader a feeling of how the Jewish community in Palestine, especially in Tel Aviv, lived in those crucial years of the Holocaust and World War II and the struggle to achieve Israeli independence. Shoval went on to play key roles, as witness or as participant, in the political history of Israel, having been involved in many of its chapters, and having working relationships with every Israeli prime minister, from David Ben-Gurion to Benjamin Netanyahu. At the Table will be of interest to readers interested in Jewish history, Israeli history, and U.S. and Israeli relations by a statesman who witnessed and shaped them.
