Irina Kwasniewska was a 14th Century peasant girl in Poznan, Poland, when her simple life turned upside down by an unexpected pregnancy upon the arrival of the Black Death. Disowned by her Roman Catholic family, she watches as her lover's family is murdered because they are Jews, and she decides no such fate will ever befall her or her unborn child.
