Robotics can be described as the current pinnacle of technical development. Robotics is a confluence science using the continuing advancements of mechanical engineering, material science, sensor fabrication, manufacturing techniques, and advanced algorithms. The study and practice of robotics will expose a dabbler or professional to hundreds of different avenues of study. For some, the romanticism of robotics brings forth an almost magical curiosity of the world leading to creation of amazing machines. A journey of a lifetime awaits in robotics. Robots in antiquity and through the Middle Ages were used primarily for entertainment. However, the 20th century featured a boom in the development of industrial robots. Through the rest of the century, robots changed the structure of society and allowed for safer conditions for labor. Robots have also been influential in the media and profitable for toy manufacturers. Industry has benefited drastically from the expanse of a robotic work force. Automated machines have taken over the duties of dangerous and mundane jobs from humans, allowing greater productivity. Because robots never tire, extra shifts have been added to factories. Just as industrial robots are remaking the manufacturing industry by creating higher production rates and improved quality, and revolutionizing the way we think about and administer business processes, IT support processes, workflow processes, remote infrastructure and back-office work. Robots' main position in society are in a capacity to assist humans by taking on the jobs that are dirty, dull or dangerous. This text provides accessible introduction to robotics that spans the most basic concepts and the most novel applications; for students, teachers and professionals.
