In 17th century England, civil wars rage, the Little Ice Age causes famine and starvation, cattle rustlers cross the borders area between England and Scotland, and the nobles become so enraged with their king they decide to kill him. Cromwell rules for a while as the country tries a republic form of government and attempts to eradicate the Irish from their homes.
Struggles among Catholics, Covenanters, Presbyterians, Anglicans, Calvinists, Puritans and others cause civil strife that results in atrocities and bloodshed on all sides.
The Cowan family finds refuge from the marauding armies and cattle thieves inside ancient stone circles in the 17th century Scottish Borders. A Druid rescues a starving child in Ireland. A rogue Catholic priest protects an orphan, introduces him to the Odenwald in Thuringia and shows him the battlefield where three Roman legions were destroyed. A Welshman hears of and considers joining a new sect called the unitas fratrum. A blacksmith in western Scotland attempts to make a living without losing his head in a dangerous world of intrigue, smuggling and violence.
