The first edition of Inland Water Transport in India by Prof. R P Misra was published by Prasaranga, University of Mysore in 1972. Inland transport is the cheapest means of carrying people and goods from place to place at the lowest possible cost and in promoting tourism is unmatched. In view of the increasing importance of this means of transport, a network of National Waterways is being developed in India. The book is being reprinted incorporating latest information on the subject. It focuses on: 1. History of inland waterways (navigable rivers, backwaters, lakes and canals) in the transport system of the country and the causes of their decline; 2. Current state of Inland water transport in India; and 3. Ongoing projects and plans to harness the potentials of inland waterways. The book is based on the secondary information derived from various sources including official reports of the central and state governments. Wherever possible, these data have been supplemented by field observations. The book is written to arouse public interest in inland waterways and their potential role in accelerating socio-economic development in India.
