Beskrivelse
This collection of over 200 old photographs of Hyde and district, including Gee Cross, Newton and Godley, have been assembled by the author, an active member of the Hyde Historical Society, from a variety of sources. Some photographs are from the Society's own collection, others have been begged and borrowed from local residents and yet others come from the extensive archives of the Local History Library at Stalybridge.
The book traces the changing face of the town from rural landscape to the urban development that came with the cotton industry. Later, as that great trade declined, we see the effects of another round of changes that occurred as new industry replaced it. We see the importance of the church, education and community spirit in local leisure activities and a variety of scenes that illustrate the day to day round of the people of Hyde.
This book will be enjoyed by everyone who knows Hyde whether they be visitors, newcomers or real 'Hydonians'.
