Set in the Burren, County Clare to the backdrop of the Irish Land Wars of the 1880s, the story revolves around the assassination of a landlord and deals with the theme of Irish hostility to English law. Emily Lawless (1845-1913) was an Irish historian, gardener, poet, entomologist, and novelist of the early modern period.
