Rapid reduction in energy use is the only way to mitigate climate risk, however a rapid reduction in energy supply would be a disaster. Modern buildings, cities, and the entire economy would fail if coal, oil and gas supplies suddenly dropped by 80%. This dissonance between the problem and the possible actions can be referred to as a “wicked problem”.
