For Landon Ratliff, a young idealistic physician, a trip to New Orleans offers the promise of embarking on specialty training that will prepare him for the life he has imagined. But encounters with a homeless alcoholic, a Tarot card reader, a zydeco band, and Charity Hospital force Landon to confront his past and his future and rethink his plans as well as his decision to become a physician. Ultimately, he is reborn, baptized in the holy water of the streets of the French Quarter.
