Beskrivelse
This thesis forms an in-depth examination of tombs and tomb decoration in Byzantine churches in Turkey and, to a lesser extent, in Greece. The emphasis, however, falls on the large number of richly decorated cave churches of Cappadocia, 46 of which are discussed in detail in a catalogue. Initially, Weissbrod discusses the layout of stone and earth Byzantine churches and the significance of the placement and structure of their tombs, before focusing on the types of decoration, including paintings, reliefs and inscriptions. The inscriptions are presented in Greek and in German translation. The study also places the tombs and iconography in their religious and social context. German text, English summary.
