After a British merchant ship crossing the Atlantic encounters a burning Spanish ship, they take on three survivors, a strange chest, and horrifying rumours of madness and death. As paranoia and superstition spreads throughout the crew, they begin to wonder if the rumours are true, and that what happened before... will happen once again.
Will the captain be able to save his ship from a similar fate? Will the young Spanish maiden be able to save herself from what she believes is inevitable? Or are their fates unavoidable?
