Doomed to die in the Cap-Haïtien earthquake of 1842, nearly twenty men, women, and children awake, fully clothed, in narrow beds in rooms carved from stone. Astounded by lights without smoke, voices that speak intelligently from black panels on the walls, stoves that heat without fire, and clean water that flows through pipes, they learn that their earthly lives are over, but a new life stretches before them, a challenging life with a noble purpose. Joined by others rescued from shipwrecks, hotel fires, and other fatal disasters, they must live together facing a mysterious future in the community called Heaven.
