HEAT: Fire in the Sky

Lucen DiPietro, an astrophysicist at UCSD, discovers a possible vacuum collapse in Taurus. It may be the end of the universe. There would be no escape. He loses tenure over over his thesis.

He buys a motorcycle to escape his depression on a cross country trip. En route he meets Birdie, a burned-out concert pianist, and they ride together to Princeton to consult with the only man who understands Luc's data.

Luc's observations about the vacuum collapse are confirmed.
