The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, written about the year 1600, is William Shakespeare's longest play and, perhaps, also his most influential. Many phrases coined in the play have attained the status of cliche in English speech and literature - they are that often repeated. Examples include 'to the manner born', 'murder most foul', 'to thine own self be true', 'neither a borrower nor a lender be', and, of course, 'to be or not to be'.
