The story of immigration to America is interwoven with our nation's history.
Ellis Island stands resolute over all other ports in telling this story. This island would be the beginning of the American dream for millions and without it opening its doors more than a century ago, the nation and the world would look very different today.
The structured process of welcoming immigrants at Ellis Island set up our nation to be that beacon on a hill. The medical advancements made at the Island would also set the benchmark on showing compassion and providing holistic care for the sick.
But, if this island never came into existence...if the land where it stands today remained nothing more than a home for a tavern or gallows to hang pirates...if this rocky island would have simply washed away beneath the Hudson River, America would have never become what it is known for today as the land of the opportunity for all.
