Grim Fate of the Last Sultan: Sultan Vahdettin

Vahdettin, the last sultan of the Ottoman Empire is the only sultan whose tomb is not in Turkey. Why is this? Why is his tomb not beside his forefathers? The tombs of the previous sultans of the empire are all within the borders of Turkey.

There are two complete opposite versions of the reigns end of Vahdettin. One version states that Vahdettin escaped out of the capital city of Istanbul, to save his own life, at the end of the empire. The second version states that he resigned from his position, and left abroad, to allow the smooth transition of the newly formed Republic of Turkey.

To this day in Turkey, and the academics who studies the empire, the debate is not concluded, whether the last sultan escaped to save his life, or left at his own freewill.

This is a heartfelt story of Vahdettin, but, the focus will be on the latter years of the last sultan of the empire.
