What is Graves' illness?
An overactive or hyperthyroid thyroid can result from Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition. You have a tiny gland in the front of your neck called the thyroid that resembles a butterfly. The function of nearly every organ in your body, including the rate at which your heart beats, is regulated by thyroid hormones, which also regulate how your body uses energy.
When you have Graves' disease, your thyroid gland produces more thyroid hormones than your body requires as a result of an immune system attack on the gland. As a result, many bodily processes quicken.
How prevalent is Graves' illness?
Just over 100 Americans have Graves' disease. In the US, Graves' disease accounts for about 4 out of 5 cases of hyperthyroidism.
What triggers Graves' disease?
In some people, autoimmune diseases like Graves' disease can develop, but researchers are unsure of why. Most likely, a virus or other external trigger contributes to the development of these disorders in addition to genes.
