Readers will learn about the importance of key issues of the era and how they affected Georgia, including slavery, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the Dred Scott case. Abraham Lincoln's election as president in 1860 caused tensions between the North and South to worsen. Students will also examine noteworthy events of the Civil War such as the Emancipation Proclamation and the Union blockade of Georgia's coast.
