Beskrivelse
The Geistes-, sozial- und kulturwissenschaftliche Anzeiger (Humanities, Social and Cultural Sciences Gazette) publishes articles from all disciplines in the humanities, social and cultural sciences and is issued annually in two volumes. A comprehensive article by Katharina Michner in the field of Greek epigraphy provides an edition, translation and commentary of 43 inscriptions from the Carian cities of Stratonikeia, Tabai, Herakleia Salbake, Apollonia Salbake and Sebastopolis which, with one exception, were previously unpublished. The inscriptions were found during two research trips by the former Asia Minor Commission undertaken by Wilhelm Kubitschek and Wolfgang Reichel in 1893 and by Eduard Hula and Emil Szanto in 1894. They include, among other things, tomb inscriptions, dedicatory inscriptions, two honorific decrees, a Christian inscription and inscriptions consisting only of names - a wide range of subjects. Probably the most interesting of the inscriptions presented here is No. 25 from Tabai, the dedication of a statue of Amphitrite to Lucius Verus, possibly Marcus Aurelius and the πατρίς. The dedicant, Kallikrates Brachyllidou, was a priest of Poseidon. Evidence for his family is provided by multiple silver and bronze coins found in Tabai. However, the text presented here is not only the first inscription on stone relating to the family but also the first piece of securely datable evidence.
