This work presents new research on the earliest persecutions of Galileo's theory of the movement of the earth, notably heretofore unknown sermons against the scientist's theories while he served as court mathematician for the Grand Duke of Tuscany. These sermons decidedly led to the Church's condemnation of Copernican thought in 1616, and will interest both scholars and the larger public. Italian text.
