"From Grief to Grace" is Doug Greene's story of how he shifted the trauma of vision loss into a transformational turning point in his life. This narrative takes readers into the darkest of places and out the other side. The journey consumed the author's life for three years and the book is the result. It starts with Doug Greene's slide into the abyss after losing much of his vision to glaucoma. He says, "As I dropped into the deepest grief I'd ever known, I experienced death reaching out to me and saw my life vectors converge into a point. I believed suicide was the best way out." But a voice inside him said, "Do your bucket list," and his pursuit of the adventures on it both saved and changed his life forever. The first item was "Kayak down the Grand Canyon." Unfortunately, a 15-year wait list made that unlikely. But fate persisted. One week later a friend called and said, "Doug, remember that Canyon permit I've been waiting on since 1995? I GOT it; are you in?" It was on that trip, in a cavern deep within the Canyon's majestic landscape, where grace intervened. He went through what he describes as the "eye of the needle" and, on the other side of that experience, found an internal spaciousness giving him the capacity to transcend the trauma. "From Grief to Grace" is his story of this experience. It weaves humor, drama, grace, near-death experiences, adventure, inspiration and a lifetime of hard-earned knowledge into a tale revealing that we can find our greatest gifts in the darkest places. And the challenge laid before us - to venture with trust and courage into the big mystery - is worth the possible life awaiting on the other side. WINNER: 2011 Transformational Author Writing Contest. WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT IT: "Brilliant writing. Fresh - like a warm breeze blowing through your cabana carrying scents of plumeria and honeysuckle. When you pick up a book like this, you want to savor it, let the taste of the images linger in your mind before taking the next step on the journey. It's not travel writing - it's brilliant adventuring." Lion Goodman; Author and former Dir. of Men's Programs at The Shift Network "Well written, gripping, integrated and informative.
