Amy Collins is a ten-year-old girl whose story is filled with laughter and tears. In 1930, her father died in New York City. Her new stepfamily was vicious and hostile toward her. An incident caused her mother to send her off to live with unfamiliar relatives in Faucette, Louisiana where her whole world changed. She had a problem making friends because she was an outsider and the locals treated her with indifference. She had to navigate through an unfriendly environment to make a place for herself. She met and tried to understand the unique citizens of Faucette. Their ways, feuds, and customs confused her, but she doggedly attempted to fit in and become a newly minted country girl. In the process, the town went through some monumental changes of its own.
