In this third book of the series, Renault convinces Queen Clothilde to leave Albion, and she flees to Gaul. Pretending she is a pilgrim, she settles in the village of Amiette, where she helps the priest, Pere Elidor, until her son Chlodomir is born. She hides from him his true identity, that he is a prince. Clothilde uses the ruby given to her to pay for a new monastery. Renault never answers her letters. Chlodomir and another boy, Blaine, clash at school. When Chlotilde tells him, on the eve of his thirteenth birthday, that his father was actually Rory, King of Northborough, Chlodomir wants to live a life of luxury. But then Pere Elidor tells her of Blaine's plan to kill her son, and they must leave. Back in Northborough, Goslar uses magic to free King Dylan from the fallen pillar. Dylan, Rory's son, was helping his mother Rhiannon with her scheme to get him back. Lughar, Rhiannon's father, notices that she is gone when he goes to her cottage looking for, and finding, the philosopher's stone. Has she flown away as the pegasus? It is a mystery to him. She had always kept to herself, but now she was missing. Meanwhile, after being saved, Dylan wants to become a Christian. He frees Renault from prison, where he had been tossed for stealing the royal jewels. Now Gondebald, the sorcerer in the tower, began to fear death as old age approached. He wanted to leave a legacy. Basically, he wanted to become famous! Princess Beatrice had selected him to tutor her dear son Morvan. He was given a classical education as well as learning spells, which he was quite terrible at. But Gondebald found out from Morvan that his father Mesmin owned a book which could help him to open the ancient chest in the turret. Inside of this chest, Gonebald hoped to find the secret to the world, the one overarching thesis which would explain everything...and make him immortal. When Clothilde and Chlodomir reach the shores of Albion, the villagers attack the Queen, but her son is able to escape. Back in the tower, Morvan and Gondebald find that the chest contained a lowly, dirty old sandal. A sandal! How would that bring immortality and fame? Then Chlodomir arrived at the castle and Ranaulf recognized him. This was a delicate matter as Bea wanted Morvan to become the next king, as Dylan had never married, indeed becoming a Christian and choosing the name Niall. He abdicates in order to study religion, and Gondebald announces a contest to find the matching sandal. Rather than reveal his true intentions, he claims that it will restore Niall's legs. To ensure Morvan finds the sandal, he gives him seven magical gifts for the journey. Using the gifts to reach the Holy Land, He trades a sword for the sandal and returns home and to Caradon Hall. As Lughar is about to crown his grandson king, Chlodomir receives another Sandal from a unicorn in the cloister garden. Ranaulf brings Chlodomir to the castle, where a struggle ensues. Will Gondebald become a god? Will Morvan finally be crowned king of the land?
