In this, Puryear's first work, the author ascribes the breakdown of the Anglo-Russian "Understanding of 1844" and the severe terms imposed on Russia in 1856 primarily to Stratford Canning's influence. The work provides an overview, using mainly primary sources, of the lead-up to the Crimean War and the war's aftermath.
