A photograph taken at a Polish train station -- and seen around the world -- depicts true Empathy. Shortly after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, strollers and prams gathered by Empathic Polish mothers were left waiting for desperate mothers and families fleeing Russian attacks for safety in Poland. This exemplifies how Empathy is much more than kind words, being highly sensitive, or being a good listener. Courage, like that shown by Polish and Ukrainian mothers in this scenario, is also required to function at the level of Radiant Empathy.
We more or less have a sense when Empathy is, or isn't, in the room. "Empathy Is More Than Words" explains the intrinsic nature of Empathy and puts to rest the confusion about what Empathy is and isn't. Dr. Marshack confronts the myths we have about Empathy. She demonstrates that Empathy is indeed more than words and that Radiant Empathy is the epitome of what is possible when an individual goes beyond having an empathic understanding of another individual and dares to have the courage to stand up for oneself and for others who are suffering, perhaps from PTSD episodes triggered by new trauma. Forgiveness, emphasizes Dr. Marshack is fundamental to possessing Empathy: Especially, forgiving ourselves.
"Empathy Is More Than Words," is an excellent addition to her line, published by the US~Observer. In her 2018 book, "When Empathy Fails: How to stop those hell-bent on destroying you," she introduced the idea of Empathy Dysfunction, or EmD, and created the Empathy Dysfunction Scale. In this book, she takes a deep dive into the topic of Empathy itself.
