U.S. Gulf Coastal marshes contain productive diverse habitats that are important for many reasons including protection of shoreline from wave actions, providing fish and wildlife habitats, and improving water quality. Throughout the region, significant petroleum exploration, refining, storing, and transportation activities are conducted on a routine basis and these marshes are therefore subject to occasional oil spills.
