Edamame is a young soybean still in the pod that is harvested early. Edamame originally came from East Asia. They are boiled or steamed and may be served with salt or other condiments. In Japan they are usually blanched. It contains complete protein, calcium, vitamin C, and other key nutrients. It can be eaten alone as a tasty snack or put them in soups, stir-fry and other dishes.

Since edamame are soybeans, they are one of the best sources of soy. Soy is rich in phytoestrogens known as isoflavones. Soy isoflavones can produce estrogen-like activity in the body by mimicking the effects of natural estrogen which is great for postmenopausal women.

Soybeans and soy foods may reduce the risk of a range of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, coronary heart disease (CHD), some cancers as well as improving bone health.
