Beskrivelse

This book offers an enquiry into the ways in which the process of differencing Morocco is furnished within the contemporary Anglo-American novels. These novels are trapped between traditional and modern codes which shift the meaning of both Western and the Eastern values embracing hybrid identities. For that reason, the process of rewriting one's identity has become a part of the Colonial desire that aims to give a sense of topicality to the representation of the Other who occupies a "fixed" image. However, the context of difference redefines the mode of Western representation as it is outlined in the area of ambivalence where the narrator oscillates between desire and fear. The process of differencing manifest in the colonial discourse entails an investigation of the questions of race, gender, history and space which enable the enactment of stereotypical and discriminatory assumptions regarding cultures and peoples. However, the question of difference functions as a powerful source for the Other, since it might be considered as a strategic reversal of the Western hegemony, thereby contributing to the circulation of power between these two opponents.
