Die vergessene Sympathie (Sympathy Forgotten) addresses the most basic bond of all: What is sympathy and why do we need to recuperate it? In exploring its scope, the study follows its resonances through classical, medieval and early modern thinking, from stoicism and platonism to Hildegard of Bingen and Shakespeare, demonstrating how the whole of sympathy is presented and effected in literary texts. An answering structure underpinning and energizing all life, sympathy is shown to embrace and transcend both human sociability and the network of natural correspondences.
