Beskrivelse
In this book the author shares with the readers his experiences in what is now Pakistan, where he was born and grew up and in the USA where he went first as a student and later as a teacher, and in the countries in which he was posted. His varied experiences as a UN expert in Kuwait, Sierra Leone and The Gambia provide interesting anecdotal material for the book. Through penetrating observation of the values and life styles of people among whom he has worked, he finds that most people are happy if their deeply held beliefs and values are not disturbed. On the other hand both super affluence and extreme poverty can be socially disturbing. Reflecting on political, economic and social changes in India during the last half century, he finds a remarkable resilience in Indian society. It has accomplished without violence changes of a magnitude which even change oriented societies find it difficult to accomplish. His acute observation of Indian society makes him optimistic about India's political and economic future.
