The mines of Mir Town were abandoned over twenty years ago. The mainland Council had understood the economic turmoil their decision would cause, but the unexplainable "sickness" that affected the miners had come with too much political pressure. In the nearby village of Rhyol, Kavriel Soelle is plagued by dreams he can't remember. While the conflict with the southern Ay'vol Nation grows more intense each day, the military hero General Saire comes to his village wanting to lead an expedition into those forgotten mines that are far from the Borderland fighting. As son of the village Overseer, Kavriel is asked to accompany Saire on this unusual request as his representative. Kavriel quickly discovers he has another agenda, and that he himself has been set upon an epic journey that will take him beyond the mines, beyond his village, and even beyond the warring nations. It will take him to a destination that will determine the fate of all mankind.
