At thirteen years old, Oscar Velásquez's is sent to live with his uncle in San Fransisco. Three things about Uncle Killian: He doesn't lie, but he rarely tells the truth. He never cooks, but always wants Oscar home for dinner. He's a witch. Between the ages of thirteen and fifteen, Oscar befriends Elvira and Fiona, his next-door neighbours who are just as secretive as Killian, Amelia and Dennis Highmore, who are also witches, and Charon Demetrias, a socially anxious siren.

Discovering the magical world isn't all sunshine and rainbows, though. The night Oscar becomes a witch himself, Uncle Killian and the family spell-book go missing. Oscar can't learn to control his magic without the spell-book, so it's up to him and his friends to find Uncle Killian before it's too late. Along the way, Oscar learns about a world-changing prophecy that involves him, and discovers that he isn't just a witch after all.
