The moon crashed into the concrete. Shards pierced
walls and tyres. And something in me shattered too.
I was walking down the promenade; tall topiaries
bowed to get a better look at me. Lamps-the old
kind, decorative and unproductive-struggled to light
my path. They lit the flowers instead. I saw the blood
in the bush, on the thorns. I was walking, as usual,
toward the dining hall, but I stopped dead and wondered
then if I should turn back: this was not my world.
