When Nico and Tony Connole are paid a surprise late-night visit at their seaside fish market by a drop-dead gorgeous stranger named Gina Quattro and two thugs from the Maladago crime family, they get a surprise that stuns them. And it isn't the stiff that the mobsters hustle into the back of the fish market for the Connoles to dispose of; the brothers have performed that little favor at least a dozen times over the years. What staggers them is the gangsters' demand that they come up with $100,000, which the Maladagos claim the boys owe them for shorting them on the cut of profits they're supposed to pay each month. And they have five days to do it. The ultimatum sets in motion a caper plot that follows the clueless brothers as they plan a daring robbery of the cash counting room of a struggling beachside amusement park during a "Zombie Invasion" promotion-the Z-Day of the title. Anyone coming to the park made up as a zombie that day will receive tickets for three free rides. A parallel plot follows the relationship between Andrew Bagley, a mildly autistic 20-year old who roams the park's midway as the "Smiles Ambassador," and his protector, Chuy Galvan, a tough guy with a soft heart. The two plot threads intersect late on Z-Day, when a gang of robbers, made-up like the hundreds of sham zombies surging through the amusement park, break into the counting room, steal the weekend's receipts and take a young female security guard hostage. The only one standing between the gang and a getaway is a pudgy 20-year old park mascot.
