Corporations and Directors: Comparing the Profit and Not-for-Profit Sectors examines the corporation - a structure that is both very common and very powerful in society - and the men and women who are at the apex of the corporation. It includes: 1) a detailed historical review of the development of corporations - from the ancient corporations and early Christian monasteries through to the colonial corporations of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries - and a discussion of the role of corporations in our society; 2) an examination of the legal basis of the corporation, including the profit and not-for-profit distinction; 3) a review of current literature on the role of board members in both the profit and not-for-profit sectors; and 4) a presentation of the results of interviews with board members who have both profit and not-for-profit boardroom experience.
