The main mover and shaker in this story is Wlliam Harpur. After twenty years of esoteric Buddhist training, Harpur had arrived at a lucid view of reality.Detached. No sentimental twaddle. Pragmatic about what is real and what is not. He wasn't bogged down by moral considerations. Good and Evil had nothing to do with it, two sides of the same coin as far as he was concerned. He had no sense of altruism, helping people improve their lot in the world or anything like that. His special view saw all things, all conditions, as equal or at least symbiotic. He saw the world in all it's inequity as Perfection, everyone brought to his situation in life in someway accountable and accounted for; the notion of Karma. His fascination for power was not for power as a means to any end. Power, to him, was an end in itself. Power was the supreme art
