In a full and energetic life, Silas Talbot went to sea, fought in the Revolutionary War, speculated in western lands, was elected to the New York State Legislature and the U.S. Congress, and appointed second commanding officer of USS Constitution. His bravery and energy helped create the new republic, and he was among the first new citizens to seize its gifts.
